Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society Chairman Sid T. May, ET3SID (SK)

Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society (EARS) Chairman Sid T. May,
ET3SID/G4CTQ/AB3OZ, passed away September 25. In 1993, May established ET3AA,
the first Amateur Radio club in Ethiopia. According to Hailemelekot Negussie,
AB3OX, of EARS, May has taught Amateur Radio licensing classes in Ethiopia for
more than 15 years. EARS is Ethiopia's IARU Member-Society.
An accredited ARRL Volunteer Examiner (VE), May administered the FCC
license exam to prospective Ethiopian hams. He took part in administering an FCC
exam session in December 2011 where more than 50 Ethiopians received US call
signs; May gave his last exam session on September 10, with 18 sitting for the
exam. Due to Ethiopian law, it is nearly impossible for Ethiopians to get an
Ethiopian Amateur Radio license. "Unfortunately, Ethiopian Security still
controls the licensing system," said IARU Region 1 President Hans Blondeel
Timmerman, PB2T. "I am afraid that more work has to be done to convince the
authorities that today's students are tomorrow's leaders and that in principle,
they are good Ethiopians who deserve their government's confidence. Another
hurdle to overcome is the examination fee of 25 British pounds, a one month's
salary in Ethiopia."
According to May's QSL card, May was primarily a RTTY operator. He held
call signs in Zambia (9J2ED), St Kitts (VP2KH), Montserrat (VP2MKH), Oman
(AX4JB), Nigeria (5N0SID), Gibraltar (ZB2HL) and Sudan (G4CTQ/ST2). He is a
member of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) and in 1973, helped found
the St Kitts Nevis and Anguilla Radio Society (SNARS). He founded EARS in the
1990s.
"Sid was a teacher, a mentor and a father to all of us at ET3AA," Negussie
explained. "We feel very saddened about the news, and extend our condolences to
his family and wish for his soul to rest in peace. Sid is survived by hundreds
of ambitious radio hams and engineers who will forever be inspired by his
humbleness and vision." [ARRL]

IARU Region 3 Chairman Michael Owen, VK3KI (SK)

IARU Region 3 Chairman Michael Owen, VK3KI, passed away September 22. He
was 75. Owen, who was also President of the Wireless Institute of Australia
(WIA) -- that country's IARU Member-Society -- participated in many IARU
committees and was a member of the IARU Observer Team at a number of World
Radiocommunication Conferences. He is perhaps best remembered for his work on
Article 25 -- a package of revisions to the international Radio Regulations that
are specific to the Amateur and Amateur-Satellite Services -- at WRC-03.
Amateur Radio societies around the world have benefited from Owen's
enthusiasm and experience; he was passionately involved with the Amateur Radio
Service since the 1960s, and served as IARU Vice President from 1989-1999.
In 2004, Owen led the WIA through the progression from a federal structure
with state divisions, to an efficient national organization with affiliated
local clubs. Through Owen, the WIA became highly regarded by government agencies
and the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for its
professionalism and efficiency, especially in relation to the WIA examination
and call sign management service. He championed and guided the introduction of
the Foundation License class in Australia, a move which bolstered the numbers of
Australian radio amateurs, while other countries' numbers were declining.
WIA Vice President Phil Wait, VK2ASD, has assumed the role of WIA
President. Wait has served as a WIA Director since 2003 and was appointed in WIA
Vice President in 2010.
Owen is survived by his wife Nan, who accompanied him on many Amateur Radio
occasions -- most recently at the WIA National Convention in Mildura -- and two
daughters. A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Friday, September 28
at St Andrews Anglican Church in Brighton, Victoria. [ARRL]

YT2A - Silent Key

Message from Radio Sekcija Kozara, YU1AAV:
Today (26 September) in Belgrade our friend Goran YT2A died in an airplane
accident. He was doing daily activity as a test pilot. His colleague ejected
from the plane while Goran stayed inside to sacrifice himself - not hitting
houses and people. He saved many lives.
Goran will be remembered as a great man, great radio operator and YUFF and
IOTA activator.
Rest in peace my friend, we will never forget you. [DX World]
